Protest at Oakland child care centers dropped: Day Cares Occupied by BAMN
Day Cares Occupied by BAMN?
In North Oakland civic authorities touched a hot spot for working people by shutting down some early development centers, and hoping to score some points and possibly new members, By Any Means Necessary tried to occupy the closing centers but got evicted. The group derives its name from a quote that started with Sartre which was later modified and adopted by Malcolm X.
Sartre:
— Jean Paul Sartre, Dirty Hands: act 5, scene 3. 1963I was not the one to invent lies: they were created in a society divided by class and each of us inherited lies when we were born. It is not by refusing to lie that we will abolish lies: it is by eradicating class by any means necessary. ”
Malcolm X
— Malcolm X, 1965“ We declare our right on this earth to be a man, to be a human being, to be respected as a human being, to be given the rights of a human being in this society, on this earth, in this day, which we intend to bring into existence by any means necessary. ”
Meanwhile the city and the parents worked out compromises in an adult manner…
Members of the community group By Any Means Necessary had planned to occupy the two North Oakland centers all weekend and open them on Monday, but police evicted them late Friday. By then, parents and district officials and talked further, and though nobody was happy about the closures, most agreed to abide by the new arrangement, representatives of both sides said.
The district had planned to shut seven of its 31 early childhood development centers Friday because of proposed state budget cuts. But when Friday came, the district managed to scrape up $2.1 million in unspent funds from last year to maintain five through December.
